OUR COMPANY
Scranton Printing Co. is a four generation, family-owned, Scranton, PA business:
| Founded by my grandfather, Nathan Strauss, Scranton Printing Co. began its existence on Olive Street, 1907. In 1940, my father, Lionel Strauss, and grandfather moved the plant to Penn Avenue, now the parking lot to the Veterans Hospital. By 1950, they moved the facility to 32 Lackawanna Avenue. In 1970, my father moved to 334-336 Adams Avenue, using 6,000 square feet on the second floor. |

At that time, I graduated from the University of Miami with a BBA Degree in Marketing and Management. I worked in corporate America for J.C. Penney [New York] and W.R. Grace [Florida]. In 1972, my wife, Diane, and I decided we wanted to raise our family in Scranton, so we moved back to the area and I went to work with my father. At that time, we were a small duplicator shop, dealing mostly with the small businesses in the Scranton Metropolitan area.
In 1988, my father retired. Seeing changes quickly developing in the industry, I knew I had to adjust the concept of the business. I started to expand by purchasing Heidelberg Printing Presses: First a 1-color 20x28; then a 2-color 14x20; next a 2-color 23x35; we also have an AB Dick 1 & 2-color Duplicator Department for small jobs; and, along with auxiliary equipment, a Halm Super Jet Press.
By 1995, we were bursting at the seams and needed more space. We rented 10,000 square feet at 614 Mulberry Street and moved the office there, while making Adams Avenue a full press room. At that time, my 16 year old son, Nathan, began working part time with me. Since then, he has attended Penn State and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Presently, at age 30, he is working full time with me managing the company. Thus, making Scranton Printing Co. a four generation family owned business.
In 1998, the big change came when we decided to purchase a 5-color Komori Printing Press. Now we needed more pre-press equipment. A CreoSitex System - the Rolls Royce of Pre-Press equipment - was purchased. By 2001, we were again bursting at the seams. Thus, over Memorial Day weekend, 2002, we moved to Penn Avenue. We broke the equipment down on Wednesday and were back in operation the following Tuesday.
In 2005 we purchased a Creo Tredsetter 800 II direct to plate PDF workflow system. With this state of the art Pre-Press system we can take your files and generate printing plates without the need for film! Soon after that we purchased a 40" 6 color + coater Komori.
Over the course of our 101 year history, Scranton Printing Co. has continued to expand and develop. Our new 41,000 square foot facility allows us to keep growing while providing increased services to our customers. We look forward to continuing that great tradition.
Sincerely,
Ken Strauss, Owner
Scranton Printing Co.
